Waiting for Printer on Windows

Every report and form in MoneyWorks can be targeted at a particular printer. Useful if you have labels or hardcopy receipts to generate. The printer driver will be used for pagination settings even if you are not actually printing.

On Windows, accessing a printer driver for a network printer that is off-line can be very slow, because Windows wants to contact the actual device on the network, resulting in a 30 second time-out delay when you only want to preview something.

How to eliminate this delay

If you don’t actually print on paper and just want to preview with no delays for off-line printers:

  1. Change your default printer to something local like MS Print to PDF
  2. Go to MoneyWorks Preferences → Documents and turn on Always use Default Printer. Then there will never be any wait

You can still select on on-line printer at any time if you actually want to print something.
